En Route is a flip-and-write game in which you create sightseeing routes to the most interesting sites in real cities (London, New York, Hong Kong, Paris, Cairo and Rio de Janeiro) and the fictional First City, full of geek references. Each city has basic and specific mechanics, so each one offers a different gameplay experience.
The cards are not randomly flipped: the active player puts a card face up, and then the two players next to him secretly choose one card each. Then, the active player selects one of the two and discards the other. After that, all players use the coordinates and other information from the two maps left on the table to draw their tourists and routes.
During the game, route segments are drawn, connecting different types of tourists to various sites and attractions. A game of En Route lasts exactly 10 turns. At the end of the game, each place of interest on the final route earns players prestige points according to its rules. Whoever creates the most satisfying tourist itinerary wins the game!
The game is characterized by constant and quite intense interaction between players, who have a certain degree of control and can strategize. It happens quickly, dynamically, and requires you to constantly think about what your opponents want to do (and sometimes even negotiate to get them to play cards that are in your favor!).
